What does your day look like? If you are like most modern Americans it is waking up, sitting in a car for a commute, sitting at your desk for 8+ hours, sitting in a car on the way home and then sitting for several hours at home after work before bed. My back hurts just thinking about it! Did you know that all that sitting could be dangerous? Well, according to a community case study (the Take-a-Stand Project) done by Centers for Disease Control, sitting for prolonged periods of time can contribute to various negative health outcomes, such as cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, cancer, diabetes and obesity…Yikes! The studies outcome was that standing desks resulted in overall happier employees who had reduced neck and back pain.
Just like you probably do, SEVA employees sit all day too. So last year our office took up the SEVA Standing Desk Project. Now we try to utilize our standing desks so that we can reap some of the benefits of the CDC study. Overall, SEVA employees are pretty happy with the change.
I know from my personal experience standing desks take some time to get used to, and when working on things that require intense concentration, I tend to want to be seated. Although, I try to make it a habit to stand for at least part of the day just to get the blood flowing. If anything at all, it’s nice to have more than 1 option to choose from when stationed somewhere for 8 hours.
It’s very easy to lead a sedentary lifestyle when you work a standard 8 hour shift unless you are intentional about it. So if you are feeling achy and sore and just blah, create your own standing desk project and see if you can benefit just a little from standing more, who knows it might just benefit you in the long term.
SEVA Technical Services sells various standing desk options if you want to give it a try. One new option is
